American Cancer Society Relay for Life

Date: 6/8/2010

Ellsworth - Child and Family Opportunities joined the American Cancer Society Relay for Life for the first time this year with 14 dedicated team members. Relay for Life is a life-changing event that gives communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, a time to remember loved ones lost, and an opportunity to fight back against the disease. On June 4th and 5th teams of people participating in the Hancock County Relay for Life camped at the Ellsworth Middle School track, and took turns walking or running around the track. Each team was asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Because cancer never sleeps, participants walked throughout the night.

Marybeth Judy, CFO team captain, has been involved with the relay event for the past three years. She joined the CFO staff as Nutrition Manager in July 2009 and organized the first Child and Family Opportunities for Hope team for the 2010 relay. "It was easy to get my co-workers interested. CFO is an organization dedicated to helping communities, and people were excited to be on the track and involved in the event." Larry Norton, CFO staff participant, and cancer survivor, shared that the experience was very special to him. "My thanks go out to everyone who sponsored, organized, participated in the event. It is wonderful for both survivors, and those who are recently diagnosed, to know they have community support." The Child and Family Opportunities for Hope team included board member Mary Beth Dorsey, many senior management staff, staff cancer survivors, and many others who joined in to celebrate, to honor, to remember, and to just have fun.

People of all ages were welcomed to walk; CFO's youngest participant, Gryphon, aged 2 years, joined with mom, Rachel Nobel, Administrative Manager, Pat Pcolar, Human Resources Manager, and Paula Foster to complete some early morning laps on Saturday.
