A Collaborative Public School Pre-Kindergarten program at the Mt. View School in Sullivan has received the green light from the State Department of Education. Beginning in the fall, the Mt. View Elementary School will partner with Child and Family Opportunities' Sullivan Head Start program to provide preschool services to Schoodic Peninsula 3 and 4-year-olds.

Applications for the program are being accepted now either by calling Child and Family Opportunities (CFO) at 667-2995 or through the Mt. View School. The program will operate at the school in two, 3-1/2 hour sessions - - morning and afternoon. All area 3 and 4-year-olds may apply, but children will be enrolled in the program based on prioritizing 4-year-old children from Sullivan, Sorrento and Franklin and Head Start-eligible children from any Schoodic Peninsula town. Enrollment for the limited slots (17 in each session) will begin soon for the fall.

The program will be using State of Maine Early Learning Guidelines and Head Start Performance Standards to guide its curriculum and services. "We are excited to extend the school community to area preschoolers and their families and we look forward to working with CFO in this collaborative effort," Bill Dove, Mt. View Principal said. He noted that a Certified Public School teacher will be hired soon to work with two Head Start teaching staff employed by CFO to deliver the program. Home visits and teacher conferences linking children's growth and development between the program and family will be offered to all families. Parent and community involvement will be key components of the program. Breakfast and lunch will be provided to children in the a.m. session and lunch and snack will be provided to children in the p.m. session.

"The Mt. View School community has been very welcoming to CFO's Head Start program and staff. We are happy to be able to extend our services to more children in the Schoodic area because of this great collaboration. This is our agency's fourth public school collaborative program and we are grateful for the opportunity to work closely with schools to assure that area children start school ready to learn," Jeanie Mills, CFO Executive Director said.
